Through clear frameworks, writing-intensive practice, and targeted feedback, our integrated programme English curriculum helps students build critical writing habits that carry forward into General Paper.

Flexible & Convenient Class Timings

We run Level 3A, Level 3B and Level 4 IP classes with weekday and weekend options. Lessons are held across Upper Thomson, Coronation, Whitley, and Pasir Ris, with placements based on availability and level fit.

Proven Success &
Results

Across our programmes, Academia’s results reflect the effectiveness of our rigorous, scaffolded, and thought-driven approach:

  • 10+ Years of Experience: Over a decade of helping students achieve their potential.
  • 50%+ AL1 Rate: Over 50% AL1s; 70% AL1s and AL2s.
  • 97%+ A/B: For O Level English
  • 70%+ Distinction Rate: For the A Level General Paper

Our success is reflected in the academic achievements of our students, and in the consistency of the methods behind those outcomes: strong frameworks, writing-intensive practice, and close feedback.

What Is IP English and Language Arts Tuition?

IP English vs.
O-Level English

In the Integrated Programme (IP), students bypass the O Levels and move straight into the A Levels or the IB Diploma. As a result, many IP schools place earlier emphasis on analysis, interpretation, and academic writing. IP English tuition supports students with stronger argumentation, more demanding reading and inference, and clearer organisation of ideas, so they can perform well in school-based assessments and build a runway towards the General Paper later on.

What Is Language
Arts?

In IP schools, English Language and Literature are intertwined in the lower secondary years, and in many cases, even integrated into a single subject. Students are expected to read closely across literary and non-literary texts, notice how language creates meaning and effect, and write with evidence and structure. That’s why our Level 3A and Level 3B Language Arts classes train these integrated skills — close reading, interpretation and disciplined writing—so students are aligned with what their schools assess and are ready for the increased demands that come later in the IP track.

Transition Pathway: IP English → GP → University

Our integrated programme English classes are structured to build progressively across the four IP years. In Years 1 and 2, students establish foundations in reading precision, writing control, and early argumentation. In Years 3 and 4, students work with more complex texts and sharpen their ability to evaluate ideas, structure arguments, and write under time pressure, creating a clear runway into the A Level General Paper and university-style academic thinking.

Our IP English and Language Arts Curriculum

Year 1–2 Language Arts (Level 3A & 3B): Foundations and Early Argumentation

In the lower secondary years, students build the core Language Arts skills IP schools expect: close reading, interpretation, and clear writing.

  • Narrative, descriptive-reflective, and early expository writing (by level)
  • Reading comprehension across literary and non-literary texts: inference, tone, purpose, and use of language
  • Summary and paraphrase skills for precision and concision
  • Grammar and vocabulary taught for clarity, control, and effective expression
  • Introduction to argumentation (especially in Level 3B), including PEEL and coherent flow of ideas

Year 3–4 IP English
(Level 4 Integrated
Programme)

Advanced Argumentation and Critical Response

In upper secondary, students work with more demanding texts and develop the writing control needed for high-stakes school assessments and the runway into GP.

  • Argumentative and discursive writing: structure, evidence, counter-arguments, and line of reasoning
  • Critical reading of opinion-driven and information-dense texts
  • Summary and synthesis for complex passages
  • Critical response writing: evaluating claims, recognising weak reasoning, and producing substantiated paragraphs
  • Timed practices (where appropriate) to build performance under pressure

Year 3-4 IP Schools on the IB Track (Level 4 Literature)

For IP students progressing into the IB Diploma Programme, English becomes more literature-centred in Years 3 and 4, involving sustained interpretation and critical study of texts:

  • Close reading and evidence-led interpretation
  • Structured literary essays with a clear thesis and line of argument
  • Analysis of language and effect, including tone, style, and literary techniques
  • Transferable skills across poetry, prose, and drama
  • Strong preparation for the sustained reading and writing demands of the IB Diploma Programme

Enrichment Through Real-World Content

Students build the substance to write well: we use real-world themes and current issues to strengthen argumentation, examples, and clarity of thought, such that writing becomes informed, not generic.

How We Teach IP English & Language Arts

Intellectual Stimulation Through Text-Based Discussion

In addition to writing, IP students need to think clearly under pressure. Built around demanding texts and questions, lessons are discussion-rich in a structured way: students learn to test interpretations, evaluate arguments, and articulate positions with clarity, before translating those ideas into disciplined writing.

Deconstruction Frameworks and Controlled Writing

We teach repeatable methods for reading and writing. Students learn how to deconstruct a passage or prompt using clear frameworks, then “reconstruct” that insight into essays and response writing with a controlled line of argument, coherent flow, and purposeful language.

Continuous Assessment & Feedback

Students receive detailed, actionable feedback on their work to ensure that improvement is consistent rather than accidental. Progress is tracked through regular checkpoint tasks and timed practices where appropriate, with teaching targeted at the patterns holding each student back.

Our Success Stories

Dear Mr Jeremiah - today is the last day of school for M and I want to take this time to thank you for all your guidance and support . She often tells us about how patient and kind you are. Despite being one of the youngest in the class, you have never made her feel that she is not good enough. Because your responses and corrections are always so gentle, she is not afraid to try, even if it means making mistakes and then learn from them. Beyond imparting knowledge, your deliberate effort to be online at least fifteen minutes before every lesson so that you could chat and build relationships with your students is really commendable too. M received her progress report today and she told she's the only one in class who has managed an A1 for English. I want to share this good news with you because you are an integral part of her learning and she couldn't have come this far without your support and unceasing encouragement. In her words, "I've learn five times more in the two hours at Academia than when I am in school the whole week". Although she has to switch to a Saturday class next year due to schedule conflict. I am really thankful that she was able to learn from you. Your emphasis on nuances has sharpened her greatly and has built an even stronger foundation. You are a tremendous blessing indeed. Thank you once again for everything, I wish you the very best and joy as you continue to impact lives at your job.

Having had the privilege of being taught by Mr Olivier from Secondary 2 to the end of my tertiary education journey in Junior College, I can earnestly attest that his teaching has transformed my proficiency in the English language. An incredibly dynamic and engaging educator, Mr Olivier uses diverse teaching methods ranging from multimedia resources to interactive class discussions to liven the classroom. Having struggled in secondary school with writing well-developed essays, Mr. Olivier’s consistent exam-focused guidance and meticulously structured essay packs were pivotal in refining my writing — breaking down complex themes and writing structures into manageable steps whilst incorporating relevant current affairs to fuel our understanding. His methodical approach to tackling comprehension questions further honed my ability to dissect texts and construct nuanced arguments. Beyond that, Mr Olivier was deeply committed to our improvement in examinations, dedicating time to review our schoolwork to provide thorough, constructive feedback that significantly improved my performance in examinations, helping me grow tremendously as both a writer and a critical thinker. Under his mentorship, my linguistic and literary insights expanded significantly, sharpening my ability to analyse, critique, and communicate with clarity and nuance. This enabled me to often rank among the top of my cohort in written examinations, excelling in both the General Paper and Literature in English subject at the A Levels.

I can say without a shadow of doubt that Dr Coomber is by far the best teacher I’ve ever had the privilege of learning from. He is extremely good at his job— his detailed essay packs and structured lessons speak for themselves, as do the nuanced and highly specific skill sets he teaches his students. Constantly aware of all his students’ strengths and weaknesses, he knows exactly how to help each and every one of them improve, as well as how to help them gain confidence in their own abilities. The resources he provides are incredibly useful, and the wide range of topics discussed in class allows students to explore areas that they would typically avoid, providing them with the broad worldview essential to excel at GP. Personally, Dr Coomber’s lessons were something I always looked forward to, for I always left feeling like I’d learnt something valuable, and improved as a student in one way or another— be it exploring a topic I was previously unfamiliar with, or gaining insight about something I knew well. I will always be thankful for the opportunity to learn from such a talented teacher, and for the fact that he sparked a genuine interest and love for the subject in me. I believe that learning with Dr Coomber is not simply something that keeps you well-equipped to tackle the GP A-levels, but also something that provides you awareness, skills and sensitivity of thought that will last you the rest of your life.

Trial Classes

Trial classes are offered in packages of three lessons, as a single session may not provide sufficient insight for parents and students to assess the programme’s suitability and teaching quality. Across three lessons, students gain a fuller understanding of our approach, while tutors have the opportunity to deliver meaningful feedback on each student’s learning progress and potential.
