Our English enrichment classes for primary and secondary students are tailored to each student’s developmental stage and academic demands. Early learners build strong foundations in literacy and expression, while advanced students learn to think more critically, write with stronger structure and intent, and engage confidently with complex texts and ideas.

Across every class, students develop the four key language domains in an integrated way. Reading strengthens writing, discussion sharpens thinking, and listening builds precision in response. This ensures students do not learn skills in isolation, but grow into well-rounded language users who can express ideas clearly and thoughtfully.

Students take part in meaningful tasks such as storytelling, discussions, debates and stimulus-based writing. These experiences make the English language purposeful and concrete, helping students practise audience awareness, tone and structure while learning how to communicate effectively in real contexts.

Vocabulary and grammar are developed through the texts and tasks students work on each week. Students learn how word choice creates tone and meaning, and how sentence structure shapes clarity and effect. This contextual approach builds stronger retention and more natural, confident usage.

Through guided analysis and discussion, students learn to notice how texts work: how meaning is constructed, how language creates effect, and how ideas are shaped by perspective and context. These habits of mind strengthen higher-order thinking and prepare students for more advanced academic work over time.

Our enrichment curriculum develops strong language ability that naturally supports school assessments and examinations. As students strengthen comprehension, writing control, language accuracy and oral communication through authentic tasks and rich texts, they also become more confident in applying these skills under timed and structured conditions.

Storytelling is woven throughout the programme, beginning with guided sentence-building and early narrative work, before gradually developing into richer, more expressive writing. Students learn how to shape a narrative, develop detail, and choose language intentionally, such that their writing becomes more vivid, coherent, and personal as they progress.

From the earliest levels, students learn to read with real understanding. As they advance, they learn to notice deeper meaning, draw connections, and discuss ideas thoughtfully. Students also engage with multimodal texts, learning to interpret visual and textual cues together, an increasingly important skill in modern literacy.

Speaking is built into classroom life. Younger students practise expressing ideas clearly and comfortably, while older students learn to respond with stronger structure, personalisation, and maturity. Through guided discussion and stimulus-based speaking tasks, students develop composure, articulation, and the ability to think on their feet.

Vocabulary and grammar are developed through what students read, write and discuss each week. Instead of learning words in isolation, students meet language in context: through themes, stories, and classroom conversation. In this way, their vocabulary becomes more natural, nuanced, and usable. Learning through context strengthens both writing quality and clarity of expression.

In Secondary 1, students strengthen narrative craft through rich literary exposure and guided writing workshops. They learn how to develop voice, shape narrative structure, and use literary techniques intentionally, while building a stronger sense of how language creates effect. Lessons include close reading, guided discussion, multimodal analysis, and stimulus-based writing tasks that help students respond thoughtfully to ideas, images, and real-world contexts.

In Secondary 2, students learn to express opinions with stronger structure and reasoning. Through discursive and expository writing, they practise organising ideas coherently, developing arguments with evidence, and improving flow. Students also learn to analyse how texts persuade through rhetorical devices, positioning, and the arrangement of viewpoints. Through this, they become more discerning readers and more convincing writers in their own right.

Across all Secondary levels, students practise expressing ideas verbally with composure and purpose. Through structured discussion, presentations, and debate-style tasks, they learn audience awareness, tone control, and the ability to respond thoughtfully under pressure. These skills support academic performance while helping students communicate with greater maturity as scholars and emerging leaders.

For older students, enrichment becomes increasingly ideas-driven. Students engage with argumentative and opinion texts, learning to deconstruct viewpoints, identify reasoning gaps, and write substantiated responses with clarity and depth. Lessons introduce broad themes such as technology, media, the environment, ethics, and social issues, while strengthening advanced academic skills including summary, paraphrase, and structured critical writing. This provides a strong foundation for later programmes such as General Paper and Theory of Knowledge.

Students work with rich texts, authentic prompts, and carefully designed tasks that invite curiosity and reflection, while teachers guide them with clear instruction and high expectations. Mr. Loh is an educator, writer, and curriculum architect who has spent his career refining what he calls the mind’s fundamental programming language: English. A Princeton scholar and former nationwide top student, he has earned multiple Literature prizes at Raffles Institution and spent a year at Oxford as part of his scholarship. In 2013, he founded Academia to bring together rigorous thinking, exceptional writing pedagogy, and an intentionally designed curriculum. He has also worked as a language consultant and copywriter for high-profile clients including Louis Vuitton and BNP Paribas, bringing the same standards of precision and sophistication into Academia’s classrooms.

Dr Neil Laurence Coomber, a highly respected educator and former Raffles Institution General Paper tutor, brings over a decade of teaching excellence and academic distinction to Academia. Trained at both the Raffles Teaching Academy and NIE, he is known for his ability to mentor students through UCAS and Ivy League applications, combining intellectual rigour with a deep commitment to student success.
